That’s nasty, Wyatt – A “Weird Science” remake on the horizon

Deadline has the deets, but my initial reaction is “DO NOT DO THIS!” Sadly, I see just where they’re coming from. The plan is to craft an R-rated comedy from the PG-13 80′s sleeper classic, and the only thing missing from the original was indeed an “R” rating. Keep in mind that this was the time when PG-13 was brand new, back before PG-13 was the new PG, and an R rated flick proved it could bring big “Hangover” profits. The trailer for the original was recently shown locally on Halloween weekend as a surprise before a screening of “Ghostbusters,” and when Anthony Michael Hall popped up the capacity crowd went nuts. Bill Paxton must appear in this, or it’s all for nothing. OH – and the classic Oingo Boingo theme, which is missing from the original trailer.

Yikes. I Don’t Even Want to Watch This for Free.

The trailer for Amazon’s new Zombieland series just popped up, and it looks like some of the straight-to-DVD crap you see on Netflix. This is not how you compete with the big dogs, Amazon. No. Not even for free. Pass.

Breaking Bad Returns August 11

Here it comes – the best show on TV is coming back for one last hurrah. Check out this cast interview with Conan O’Brien. Spoiler alert: they address the rumor of a Saul spin-off, and FAN SPECULATION: Jonathan Banks is present, which could suggest a flashback, or simply a desire to have him there because he is awesome. Also: Bryan Cranston is either suffering from a cold, allergies, or has recently been doing a lot of yelling.

Watch A G.I. Joe Movie Right Now!

The rebooted, re-jiggered, 3d’ed and Bruce Willis-inated G.I. Joe: Retaliation has finally been released. I have no idea how well this is going to go over. I know Hasbro has shiploads of action figures they put on ice during the wait they need to sell, so this is an important moment or money will burn. Just to be on the safe side, why don’t you watch a little of G.I. Joe: The Movie, the 1987 animated film? Having learned their lesson from Prime’s death in Transformers: The Movie, Duke’s death is demoted to “a coma” with a clumsily-added line of dialogue. (Spooooiler alert?) Sadly, they went forward and abandoned classic characters by act two, so you’ll have to deal with DON JOHNSON as Lt. Falcon and lots of weird wiggly crap in Cobra-La, including Burgess Meredith. The ENTIRE MOVIE is on Youtube, shown below. The entire movie. Wow.

Spielberg super-drops the ball handing Jurassic Park 4 to Colin Trevorrow

My first reaction on hearing this news was: “Who?” Then, second sentence in, I read that Colin Trevorrow is the director of Safety Not Guaranteed.

Wow. Just watched Safety Not Guaranteed on good ol’ Netflix last week. I was THOROUGHLY disappointed. My initial guess? The director missed hitting ANY of the possible notes the film could have taken on. Why? Aubrey Plaza’s performance was uneven – at first she was in her “Daria” mode, as we see in Scott Pilgrim and Parks and Rec, but for the bulk of the film she plays it pretty normal (and a tad bland). Mark Duplass as the male lead is dreadful (and a producer on the film, explaining much). He’s too old, and never once tells me through his performance if he’s crazy, brilliant, dangerous or even likeable. Jake Johnson’s character is a womanizer that has a B-story that is the best thing the film has going for it. When that hits a wall, his character reverts back to exactly where he was before, when we’d need him to be changed by the experience or come back even more despicable than before. The main thrust of the story? The existing structure for mystery, suspense, surprise – all squandered. While we could get something decent with enough money and Spielberg hanging over his shoulder, I have ZERO confidence in JP4.
